Barcelona’s blaugrana identity combines blue and garnet. The club dates the choice to 13 December 1899, but leaves its original inspiration uncertain. Its preferred explanation connects the colors to Merchant Taylors’ rugby team and the Witty brothers. FC Barcelona identity; club origin history.
Three different questions often become mixed together: which colors identify the club, why they were chosen, and which technical values belong in a particular file. The evidence is stronger for some of those questions than for others.
What is established, and what remains a theory?
| Question | What the club’s sources establish | What remains open |
|---|---|---|
| Which colors form the identity? | Blue and garnet. | A named identity is not a universal screen specification. |
| When were the shirt colors chosen? | The club’s history gives 13 December 1899. | The motive behind the decision lacks decisive written proof. |
| Which origin explanation does the club favor? | The Merchant Taylors connection. | The club presents it as the likeliest account, not a fully documented certainty. |

That distinction matters when retelling a famous origin story. A present-day institution’s endorsement is evidence of its position; it does not turn an unresolved founding motive into a surviving contemporary record.
The Merchant Taylors explanation
The club’s 2016 article links the Witty brothers to Merchant Taylors in Crosby. It describes family testimony and a historic rugby-team photograph as support for the idea that they proposed their school colors. Barcelona endorses that interpretation while retaining an explicit uncertainty. FC Barcelona, “The origins of FC Barcelona’s colours”.
The account also examines a Basel connection and an accounting-pencil story; neither is presented as proven. A careful account keeps the preferred theory attributed and the alternatives identified as claims. FC Barcelona’s discussion of the competing explanations.
For a reader researching the colors, the most useful conclusion is therefore specific: Barcelona has a stated preferred explanation, alongside a documented limit to what can be proven. An extra flourish that removes that limit makes the story less accurate.
The colors stayed recognizable while the kit changed
Color identity and kit layout are separate records. Barcelona’s identity page describes early white shorts, a later black period and blue shorts from the 1920s. FC Barcelona, “The colours”.
The club’s 2024 shirt history also documents returns to a halved design, including a centenary-era version and the 2024/25 home shirt. These are dated design choices within the broader identity, rather than evidence for one unchanging shirt arrangement. FC Barcelona’s halved-jersey history.
| Reference | Documented design detail | Use the information for |
|---|---|---|
| Early club period | White shorts, later followed by black | A broad historical sequence; exact transition dates need more evidence. |
| From the 1920s | Blue shorts in the identity page’s summary | Understanding the evolution described by that source. |
| 2024/25 | A home shirt using a halved design | A season-specific design example, not a current-kit assumption. |

Crest Pantones and shirt colors answer different questions
Article 2 of Barcelona’s 2021 statutes points to an annex describing the crest colors. That annex contains Pantone callouts. It is evidence about the crest in that document; it does not by itself specify universal website HEX values or the colors of every home shirt. FC Barcelona statutes, Article 2 and annex, page 73.

- Pantone callouts in the 2021 annexA dated asset specification. Component mapping remains unverified here. No technical swatches displayed.

- Digital reference
- A source-qualified numberAn applicable asset guide or stated method. A sampled pixel is image-derived, not automatically official.
These are evidence categories, not an official Barcelona palette. No crest artwork, kit image or Pantone-to-HEX conversion is reproduced.
Reading a swatch number also requires reading its context. A crest component, a textile color and a screen color may each need a different specification. A conversion should identify its method and assumptions; it should not acquire official status merely because the starting document was official.
How to use a Barcelona-associated reference responsibly
Begin by identifying the object you are representing. For a historical article, use the supported names and date the examples. For commissioned identity work, obtain the relevant approved specification. For an independent design study, label a chosen digital palette as illustrative and keep its source visible.
The FC Barcelona reference page offers a quick ColorIndicator lookup. Its displayed screen references should be read with their provenance; the historical and crest sources used in this article do not authenticate those values as a universal digital standard.
Test the actual foreground and background in the Contrast Checker. A recognizable association with a club does not tell you whether body text, a link or a score label will be readable. W3C’s text-contrast guidance applies to the colors actually used in the interface. W3C, Contrast (Minimum).
